Owens House CAC is pleased to have been able to offer various educational programs to Shelby County Elementary and Intermediate Schools for the past 12 years. Over the years we have had several programs, focusing on body safety for K-3rd and Conflict Resolution for 4th and 5th grades. We are excited to be able to continue our programs thanks in part to the Shelby County Board of Education’s At-Risk Grant.

The purpose of this booklet is to inform school counselors, teachers, and parents of the programs we have to offer and what our age recommendations are for each. We hope that you will take time to look over the program summaries and allow Owens House CAC the opportunity to teach your student how to stay safe in a fun and age- appropriate manner! Hi, my name is Reggie! I am a member of the Owens House CAC team and I have so much fun meeting Kindergarteners from all overShelbyCounty. Owens House CAC Staff Members and I love teaching Pre-K and Kindergarten students the importance of staying safe!

The Reggie Presentation is designed for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Reggie is the main character in the interactive facilitation. The students actually help Reggie to learn personal safety while learning the concepts themselves. Reggie’s main focus is to teach the students the difference between welcome and unwelcome touches; personal safety zones; and how to respond to unwelcome touches (say “No”, “Get Away”, and “Tell Someone”).

“Someone to Talk To”

Owens House CAC is probably best known for the Puppet Show that has been with us since the beginning of our prevention programs. The puppet show is age- appropriate for first and second graders, but we prefer to do it for first graders. The puppet show allows students to interact with the puppets, as well as the facilitator, in order to demonstrate what they have learned. Each puppet has a problem (bullying, physical/sexual abuse, neglect). They learn that these situations should not be happening, and therefore, learn the importance of telling an adult.
It is amazing to see how many of the older students remember the puppet show and the characters’ problems as well as their names. We are so glad to see the impact this program has had on students. Owens House’s goal with these programs is to provide knowledge to children so they will know how to be safe and how to get help for themselves or their friends if the need arises!

“Spider-Man: Don’t Hide Abuse”

The Spider-man video addresses the issue of physical abuse. A young elementary student is afraid to tell anyone that her father physically abuses her. Her friends become suspicious of her bruises and they ask Spider-man to help out. Spider-man is able to give the children advice and eventually Maria tells her secret to a trusted adult.
This presentation is appropriate for second graders. They will become aware of physical abuse and how it is different from a normal discipline. It also reinforces the need to have a support system of trusted adults that they feel comfortable talking to. Our main goal in all of our programs is the importance of students telling adults about bad secrets, which is defined during the facilitation. The students are also asked during our visit to name some adults that would be included in their personal support system.

McGruff on Self-Protection

This video/presentation is utilized with third grade students to solidify the importance of body safety. The program focuses on several situations, including child neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. The objectives of the video and interactive facilitation are as follows:

  • To teach children that they have the right to feel safe and protected
  • To suggest potentially abusive situations
  • To offer strategies for getting help with abusive situations
  • To identify trusted adults who children can talk to about problems
